Weaving together such diverse highlights as the Andes, a Lake District Crossing, and a stay at an authentic estancia with the more urban appeal of Santiago and Buenos Aires, this distinctive small group tour presents a fascinating look at two of our neighbors to the south. And everywhere we go, we enjoy the warm welcome offered here to neighbors from the north.
Day 2: Arrive Santiago After arriving in the Chilean capital this morning, we transfer to our deluxe hotel to rest before this afternoon’s city tour featuring Santiago’s renowned Pre-Columbian Museum, housing more than 1,500 pieces of ceramics, textiles, and other cultural artifacts from the ancient peoples who once inhabited the mainland. Tonight’s welcome dinner is at Entre Rios restaurant. D
Day 3: Valparaiso/Vina del Mar Today we travel to the beach-lined central coast to tour the old port of Valparaiso, a onetime fishing village marked by colorful wooden houses. We explore the narrow, winding streets on foot and by charming wooden funicular. We enjoy lunch together in Valparaiso before returning to Santiago mid-afternoon. B,L
Day 4: Concha y Toro Winery This morning we enjoy a tour and tasting at Concha y Toro Winery, one of Chile’s top producers. Our afternoon is at leisure in Santiago before we dine tonight as guests in the homes of gracious Santiago families. B,D
Day 5: Puerto Montt/Puerto Varas We fly this morning to Puerto Montt, gateway to Chile’s Lake District. A brief tour here includes the port and fishing enclave of Angelmo Cove and the local artisan market. We stop in Monteverde for lunch in a rural farm setting, then continue on to our hotel in the resort town of Puerto Varas on the shores of Lake Llanquihue. The afternoon is at leisure to enjoy the beautiful setting; dinner tonight is at our hotel. B,L,D
Day 6: Lake Llanquihue/Frutillar This morning we see the small shoreside villages on 330-square mile Lake Llanquihue, and the town of Frutillar, where we visit the Museum of German Colonization. After returning to our hotel around lunchtime, the afternoon is at leisure. Tonight we enjoy a private group dinner at the intimate Chilean-style lodge Martin Pescador, a private quincho (barbeque) where we dine on local specialties and Chilean wines. B,D
Day 7: Lake District Crossing/Bariloche It’s a full and distinctive day of travel, as we journey by coach and catamaran to Bariloche, along the way passing through stunning Lake District scenery of Andes peaks, narrow mountain passes, glassine lakes, dense forests, and scenes of rural life. We cross from Chile into Argentina, arriving this evening at our hotel in the resort of Bariloche, well situated on the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi within Nahuel Huapi National Park. B,L,D
Day 8: Bariloche We relish more beautiful scenery on this morning’s tour featuring the Llao Llao peninsula, nestled between lakes Moreno and Nahuel Haupi; and Lopez Bay, offering stunning views of the Otto Mountains. We continue on to Campanario Hill where we board chairlifts for the seven-minute ride to the top – and to spectacular panoramic views. We return to our hotel in time for lunch on our own and an afternoon at leisure – perhaps to wander into Centro Civico and visit with the St. Bernards for which Bariloche is known; or to tour the Museo de la Patagonia, to learn more about the history of the area. B
Day 9: Bariloche/Buenos Aires/Guerrero After a morning at leisure we transfer to the airport for the flight to Buenos Aires, where we board a motorcoach for the two-hour drive to Estancia Bella Vista de Guerrero. Upon arrival we enjoy a late dinner at the estancia. B,D
Day 10: Guerrero Today we encounter the authentic gaucho lifestyle, as we’re free to explore and engage in the activities of the estancia, set amidst the Pampa plains dotted with picturesque slopes, lakes, and century-old woodlands. Activities here include guided nature walks, horse riding, boating, cycling, and swimming; an Interpretation Centre helps us to understand the region’s history, both natural and cultural. We take our meals in the elegantly refurbished 19th-century main house, once the site of cattle auctions. B,L,D
Day 11: Guerrero/Buenos Aires This morning is free to savor the ranch experience as we wish. After lunch here we depart for Buenos Aires, Argentina’s capital and largest city, arriving mid-afternoon. Tonight we dine at legendary Esquina Carlos Gardel, one of the city’s premier tango houses, where the show promises to be as memorable as the meal. B,L,D
Day 12: Buenos Aires A morning tour of this European-accented city takes in the stylish mansions and lovely parks and gardens of Palermo; the colorful bohemian districts of La Boca and San Telmo; elegant Recoleta, with its cemetery of elaborate mausoleums (including that of Eva Peron); and historic Government House. Along the way we learn about European immigration to Argentina, as well as about Argentine politics, music, and theater. The afternoon is free for independent exploration. Dinner tonight is on our own. B
Day 13: Buenos Aires Today we travel through attractive riverside suburbs to the port town of Tigre, an ecological reserve. Here we board a catamaran to tour the vast delta of the Paran River, with its colorful houses perched on stilts, for a languid and leisurely excursion. We return to Buenos Aires late afternoon; tonight we celebrate our South American adventure at a farewell dinner at our hotel. B,L,D
Day 14: Buenos Aires/Depart for U.S. We spend this morning and early afternoon at leisure then transfer to the airport for our flight to the U.S. via Santiago. B
Day 15: Arrive U.S. We arrive in the U.S. this morning and connect with our flights home.
