Though now a proud resident of New Delhi, tour director Ritu Sharma hails from “the land of the gods” – the mountainous province of Uttarakhand in India's far north. Legend has it that the Hindu gods live amid the Himalayas here, and give their blessing to the headwaters of the sacred Ganges, which flows down from these soaring peaks.
Ritu takes immense pride in her role as a Tour Director: “I love my work and consider myself truly fortunate,” she says. “I get to unravel my country’s immense history, vibrant culture, and delectable cuisine. At the same time, I’m learning from these discerning travelers. It’s an incredible cultural exchange.”

When asked what she most enjoys sharing about her beloved India, Ritu’s answers run the gamut: “When I’m on the coach, it’s about the flora of my country. When I’m at the site, it’s the little things that add up to create these incredible monuments, right from the thin Lakhori bricks to the plastering technique, the graceful movement in the sculpted figures, the incredible technology that existed back in time, the frescos; it all adds up.
“The highlight, more often than not, is the smile on the faces of the locals who are eager to strike up a conversation with my guests and want to be photographed with them. Everything counts.”

Not content with one thought-provoking and engaging pursuit, Ritu spends her time off tour focusing on her various art projects: “I like to paint – it’s my meditation,” she says. “I like using acrylics while painting, though I also use watercolors every now and then. This interest in art is opening up the art world for me. I love watching videos on the masters and I’m getting to learn about the different art movements around the world and in my own country. It’s fascinating.
“I also like reading, as I would not have stories to tell if I were not an avid reader! And come winter, I take out my knitting needles and get myself some knitting yarn.”
