When you imagine traveling the world, where do you dream of going? Perhaps you picture yourself in Rome standing under the Sistine Chapel’s ornate ceiling, or in Peru floating down the Amazon River, or in Egypt gazing upon the pyramids in-person…
These destinations are popular for good reason; each has its own unique experiences, diverse cultures, rich history, and stunning natural beauty. However, many oft-overlooked locations with equally rewarding travel opportunities don’t attract the same number of visitors – despite having a wealth of treasures waiting to be discovered.
From the medieval castles of the Balkans to the culture-rich villages of West Africa, below are five “off-the-beaten-path” locales we think should be on everyone’s travel wish list. Keep reading to learn why.
Floating village of Ganvié, Benin
There's so much to absorb on our West Africa Discovery small group tour. While learning about Ghana, Benin, and Togo’s involvement in the Atlantic slave trade, we immerse ourselves in the daily lives of the local people. We visit a workshop that crafts the “fantasy coffins” for which Ghana is known, see firsthand the power of Vodun alongside a working healer, watch the anonymous Zangbeto (“Guardians of the Night”) perform their whirling dances, receive our Akan names in a sacred ceremony, and much more.
Shakhi Zinda Necropolis, Samarkand
The Silk Road was once an intricate network of trade routes facilitating commerce between Europe and Asia starting in the 2nd century BCE all the way through the mid–15th century. Though the Silk Road’s trade routes are no longer in use, the region remains as culturally and historically significant – and alluring – today as it was 2,000 years ago. On tour, we marvel at art and architecture that tells a story of the interwoven cultures of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan, all while enjoying the hospitality of residents through personal encounters, including visits with local artisans and lunch with local families.
Bran Castle | Transylvania, Romania
To many, the Romanian region of Transylvania is best known as the home of Count Dracula, the titular character of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel. And while Vlad the Impaler – the real-life inspiration for Stoker’s Dracula – was allegedly born there, he represents only a fraction of Transylvania’s story. Today, the region is a highlight of our Bulgaria & Romania Discovery small group tour. From Transylvania’s medieval fortresses to the Palace of the Parliament in Bucharest, from Romania’s Black Sea coast to the dramatic mountains rising high into the Bulgarian sky, Bulgaria & Romania Discovery gives guests an in-depth look at two truly unique destinations.
Peggy's Cove Lighthouse
The charming regions of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island make for a scenic and history-infused journey on our The Canadian Maritimes tour. Our coastal adventure includes fishing villages and port cities full of French fortifications and colonial British settlements, as well as serene nature reserves protecting rugged rocky beaches and secluded wildflower fields. Dinner aboard a working lobster boat, iconic lighthouses, whale watching, and more – see and do it all on The Canadian Maritimes.
Old City, Cartagena
Of the many beloved destinations in the Caribbean, Colombia is often overlooked. But the country boasts a wealth of gems for travelers to experience: diverse indigenous cultures, Spanish Colonial heritage, lush tropical settings, delicious specialty food and drink (coffee, anyone?) … the list goes on. On Jewels of Colombia, we travel from the capital city of Bogota to colorful Medellin to historic Cartagena, soaking in the warmth of the local people and enjoying some surprises along the way.
