After splitting her early years between Tokyo and Birmingham, England, Mariko Hirata and her family returned to and settled in Tokyo when she was eight, which sparked her lifelong love affair with Japan. “Japanese culture can be fascinating,” she says, “and sometimes delightfully quirky!"

“What a PRO! Mari is everything one would want in a tour director. She is kind, attentive, and SO wanting to make sure the experience was a good one for everyone.”

Mariko still lives in Tokyo today, and she delights in introducing people to the wonders of her beloved homeland. “On this tour, I want the guests to feel the contrast between the places we visit. We’ll explore everything from lively big cities to peaceful mountain towns. We’ll get swept up in the energy of city crowds, then enjoy meeting locals in a special hands-on workshop. We’ll wander through historic sites and also experience Japan’s modern side."
When she’s not leading tours, Mariko enjoys walking, swimming, traveling with her husband, and continuing to learn about her country and culture. “A couple of years ago, I started learning the Japanese tea ceremony,” she says, “and I’m still enjoying the journey!”
